The Healing Powers of Essential Oils

Rest. Relax. Recuperate. Reinvigorate… all of these R-words represent benefits derived from the use of pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils such as those available at DB Aroma. Oils are "essential" in that they carry the "essence" of the plants from which they're derived, usually through the process of steam distillation. These distillates are then used in various processes as scents and flavorings in food and drink manufacturing and in the making of soaps, perfumes and cosmetics. Pure essential oils have also been used for more than two thousand years for a variety of medicinal purposes. While some may be ingested, most are either applied topically or diffused in the air and inhaled – a process known as aromatherapy.

Pure Distillates

Before the discovery of the distillation process back in the eleventh century, essential oils were extracted from plants through pressing. Extremely large amounts of raw materials were needed in order to produce relatively small amounts of pure oil. With distillation, raw plant material is placed into a vessel called an alembic, which is then put over heated water. As the water turns to steam it passes through the raw material, turning the volatile compounds into a vapor. These vapors go through a coil, similar to the process used for making alcoholic spirits, and are then condensed back into a liquid state where they are collected in their pure, essential form.

Some of the common essential oils in use today include peppermint, lavender, eucalyptus, ginger, citrus (grapefruit, orange, lemon), sandalwood, chamomile, rose and others. Most are produced through a single-phase distillation process, although citrus oils are more likely to be cold-pressed in a way similar to the production of olive oil. The essential oil called ylang-ylang is also an exception, in that the fractional distillation required to produce this oil may take almost 24 hours to complete.

Plant materials used during distillation may include:
·           Bark
·           Wood
·           Flowers
·           Seeds
·           Roots
·           Leaves and peels

The water left behind as a byproduct of the distillation process is often used for specific purposes, such as in the manufacture of cosmetics. Referred to as hydrosol or herbal distillate, common forms include lavender water, rose water and lemon balm.

Essential Oils' Healing Powers

The use of pure essential oils in aromatherapy treatments has been shown to contribute to the alteration of one's mood, cognitive functioning, mental state and health. Lemon oil, for example, has been demonstrated to relieve stress and to be an effective mood enhancer and to aid in relaxation. Jasmine, lavender, peppermint and chamomile have all been shown to be effective when used to counter anxiety, stress and depression.

Topical application of certain essential oils such as tea tree oil can have an anti-microbial or antiseptic effect. French chemist René-Maurice Gattefossé, who was the first to write on the topic of "aromathérapie," reported how, in 1910, his badly burned hand was successfully treat
ed through the use of lavender oil. Jean Valnet, a French surgeon, pioneered the modern-day day use of essential oils as antiseptics in treating wounded WWII soldiers.

Essential oils available through DB Aroma are all 100% pure, natural, therapeutic grade products. They provide relief from headaches, migraines, aches, pains, stress, anxiety, depression, allergies, ADD, ADHD and more, including appetite suppression and cigarette cessation.
